Often called traction, it is a mechanical device used to treat conditions of the spine including disc herniations and compressions, nerve root compression and osteoarthritic discogenic conditions. Research has shown that applying a traction force to the spine reduces pressure on intervertebral discs, relaxes tense muscles, relieves compression and irritation of the nerve roots and improves circulation.
At Revolution Physiotherapy and Massage, we utilize the most advanced equipment in treating a variety of spinal conditions. The more advanced spinal decompression machines differ from the traditional traction machines in that they utilize a sensitive computer feedback system that allows for continuous monitoring of the patient’s muscular reaction and will adjust the pull force accordingly to allow for optimal patient comfort throughout the treatment. The physiotherapist can select specific treatment parameters including the force of the distractive pull, the speed of the pull, the type of pull (intermittent vs. static) and the angle at which the force is applied, which allows for a customized treatment for each patient and their respective condition.
Here is a list of conditions that can benefit from spinal decompression:
- Disc Protrusions and Herniations
- Nerve Root Compression and Irritations: cervical and lumbar radiculopathy
- Degenerative Disc Disease
- Sciatica
- Spinal Stenosis
- Facet Syndromes
- Acute Muscle Spasm
- Bilateral Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
