Functional Dry Needling (FDN) is also referred to as dry needling or intramuscular stimulation (IMS). It is a technique that utilizes thin needles, like those used in acupuncture, to treat myofascial pain. The technique targets shortened muscles that contain trigger points, are producing pain and are restricting normal movement patterns. In addition to easing the pain from these trigger points, dry needling can increase flexibility and improve range of motion which makes it a highly effective method for treating both chronic muscle pains and fibromyalgia as well as sports injuries and various soft tissue conditions.
Here is a list of some conditions that can benefit from dry needling:
- Muscular Strains
- Sports Injuries
- Whiplash
- Neck Pain and Stiffness
- Low Back Pain
- Tension Headaches
- Temporomandibular (TMJ) Dysfunction
- Repetitive Strain Injuries: tennis elbow, achilles tendonitis, patellar tendonitis, rotator cuff strains, shin splints
- Frozen Shoulder/Adhesive Capsulitis
- Piriformis Syndrome
